The writers


Martina Cooney is an organic farmer from County Longford, where she was born and educated. She has had an eclectic career path involving a number of years in catering and hotel management in Dublin, before graduating from NUI Maynooth in Eldercare Management and Counselling. As a member of Longford Writers Group Martina wrote a chapter in their novella Let Him Lie.

Irene Doran is originally from Dublin and has lived in Longford for the past 12 years. As a teenager she wrote short stories and poems as a hobby. Irene is a stay-at-home mother who home educates her two children. She is currently working on writing children’s stories and poems in the hope of publishing them in the future.

Dan Flynn moved to Ireland from Canada in 1992. He is a member of Longford Writers Group and authored the Ernie McPhee chapter in the novella Let Him Lie. He also created the cover. Dan’s art work has been exhibited in Longford and Portlaoise. He has sold works in Ireland, Canada, the UK, and the USA.

Ann Gerety Smyth is a member of Longford Writers Group. She is a partner in Creative Ardagh and Scéalta Beo, (living stories), based in Ardagh Heritage and Creativity Centre. She loves storytelling, writing, history, mythology and re-enactment, She has short stories published in various anthologies, a chapter in the novella Let Him Lie, and has been placed in writing competitions.

Eddy Lane came to Ireland from South Africa in 1989. When his family was young, he loved telling stories at bedtime about a magical character he had created. Now he has grandchildren he hopes to publish an anthology about this character’s adventures. ‘Bring together’ in Home Made was his first venture into writing for publication.

Cara Martin is in Junior Cert year in Wilson’s Hospital School. She is an avid reader and likes to write short stories and poems. Cara, has had poems published in Windows Publications. In 2018 she came 3rd in the Padraic Colum poetry festival and this year was 3rd in The Swift poetry competition. She would like someday to publish her own collection of poetry.

Sally Martin is from Co. Longford and lives here with her family. She loves writing and photography. She has had several stories and photographs published. Sally, a member of Longford Writers Group, last year wrote a chapter and helped in the publishing of their novella Let Him Lie. Sally is currently working on a short story collection and children's stories.

Maggi McKenna recently graduated from college after studying Advanced Level Performing Arts and Theatre Studies. She is also a member of Longford Writers Group and wrote a chapter in their collaborative novella Let Him Lie. Maggi is a keen poet and also does storytelling and stand-up comedy. She has recently been treading the boards with Furthur Theatre Company.

Rose Moran is a member of Longford Writers Group. She has contributed to the many Longford Anthologies and Literary /artistic projects in the county. Her own poetry collections include: From Dawn through Dark; Echo Fields; Meadow of the Spell; Roots and Wings; Call in the Wild. She is currently working on a new collection: Beside The Singing River.

Eileen Moynihan is the SCBWI Ireland - Midlands co-ordinator and a member of Longford Writers Group. She has short stories published in 3 anthologies and a chapter in the collaborative novella Let Him Lie. Eileen has self-published 5 children’s books. She was born in Essex, England and was raised on the Isle of Wight. She came to Ireland in 1978 and currently lives in Co. Roscommon.

Ruth Sweeney is ‘Mum’ to her three boys first and foremost. She has always made up stories for the boys and their friends, many of which they have taken as gospel. She is currently finishing the illustrations in her first book The Blue Boy. Her son Jacob created the picture for her story.
